Abstract

The performance of machines and mechanisms with friction units directly depend on lubricants used, so improving their tribological properties is an important problem. Detonation nanodiamonds are a promising nanomaterial for lubricant additives due to their unique mechanical, physical, and chemical properties. This paper presents the results of long-term full-scale tests of two identical piston air-compressors with a maximum power of 3.6 kW and an operating pressure of up to 10 bar, using lubricating oil with and without an additive based on modified nanodiamonds. The compressors continuously operated under identical cyclic operation conditions for 576 hours. The studies were conducted at room temperature on a rig equipped with devices for automatically setting the loading cycle and recording the energy consumption, oil temperature, and the time required to reach the specified pressure level. The obtained results indicate that the addition of 0.01 wt% modified detonation nanodiamonds to the lubricating oil leads to an improvement in the performance characteristics of the compressor, reducing the power consumption and the time required to reach a given pressure level, as well as lowering the operating temperature of the oil.
