Abstract

In the presented work, the effect of mechanical activation on the structural and phase state of powder reagents of the Ti-Al-C system, and also revealed the features of the implementation of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis in the prepared mixture are studied. The following mixtures were used for the research: 1) 78% Ti + 14% Al + 8% C; 2) 80% Ti + 12% Al + 8% C; 3) 81% Ti + 10% Al + 9% C. The mechanical processing of powder mixtures was carried out in a planetary ball mill AGO-2. The treatment duration was 7 minutes at an energy intensity of 40 g. Mechanical activation of these compounds leads to an increase in the diffuse background, a decrease in the intensity of diffraction reflections of the mixture components and a broadening of peaks, as well as micro-deformations. Depending on the ratio of the components, the structural parameters can either increase or decrease in comparison with the initial ones. After the implementation of high-temperature synthesis in a powder mixture of Ti + Al + C, it was found that the reaction product contains MAX phases Ti2AlC and Ti3AlC2, titanium carbide TiC, as well as unreacted C. The ignition temperature was 1235 ± 15 °C, and the maximum synthesis temperatures reached 1800 ± 15 °C. With a two-minute high-temperature exposure, stabilization of the reaction products is observed, which is expressed in a decrease in the level of diffuse background on diffractograms.
