Abstract

This article examines how foreign students perceive Russian literature. It analyzes the general characteristics of Russian classics relative to the European tradition. The authors identify a group of stereotypes associated with classical Russian literature that foreign students develop. A comparative approach, involving a comparative analysis of thematically similar works of Russian and foreign literature, is proposed as a method for overcoming these stereotypes and for adequately understanding the substantive and ideological components of classic Russian literature. This approach involves a comparative analysis of thematically similar works of Russian and foreign literature. As an example, a comparative analysis of A. Kuprin's story «The Garnet Bracelet» and I.W. Goethe's novel in letters «The Sorrows of Young Werther» is presented, based on materials from a literature lesson for foreign students with a B1+ Russian proficiency level.
